15. Select-O-Matic

Category – History

In the 1950s, roadside diners and malt shops displayed the Crosley Select-O-Matic on their countertops. This chrome cabinet had lighted pages of song charts that turned like a carousel and could play a favorite tune when you inserted a nickel. In 1920, Powel Crosley Jr. started a company that developed broadcasting and inexpensive radio manufacturing. He also built a 500,000 watt radio tower that communicated President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Fireside Chats all the way to Australia.

Question

·         Powel Crosley Jr. is rarely mentioned today, yet he pioneered many inventions still in use, such as the first car to have disc brakes and the fax machine. Can you guess a few other “firsts” he developed?
