40. Long Bien Bridge

Category – History and Engineering.

Long Bien Bridge looks like it was made from a giants erector set, full of crisscrossed metal girders. The design hints at its creator and Vietnam’s legacy as a former colony of France.

Question

  • Do you remember from reading the story who engineered Long Bien Bridge?
  • What other famous engineering triumph was created by this man?

Assignment – Discover the answer by re-reading that section of Sign of the Rat. In the Kindle and iPad version, you can search for the phrase “Long Bien” – and in paperback, the answer is near the bridge illustration on page 173.
