In America, an “ultralight” is called a light-sport aircraft. (The FAA reserves the term “ultralight” for even smaller airborne vehicles, like parasails and hang gliders.) American use of small, improvised personal airplanes became popular in the 1970’s, when Wes and Tim Friesen flew around the Hawaiian Islands in home-made aircraft. Local media nicknamed them the “Wrong Brothers,” in contrast to the Wright Brothers. Despite such early scorn, light-sport aircraft have really caught on. In Canada, this type of airplane makes up almost 20% of the private aviation fleet. Their contribution in the U.S. is unknown, since we don’t keep statistics about this aircraft category.
